Popularity

Human nature is such that everyone has a need to fit in somewhere and find their niche or place in society. With that need comes another one which is fast becoming the death of basic morals and values , its called Popularity. Before the existence of Social Media, things which were normally a bit extreme or racy were kept hushed up because there was no forum for it plus you wouldn't dare put up anything your mother did not approve of. A post was something on the schools bulletin board with prestick on it. But in todays society everybody's dirty laundry is all being exposed and it has become an acceptable norm to see pictures of half naked men and woman and all sorts of other things I wish I could unsee, and with that respect has been replaced with attention. The racier the pic -the more likes you will get and friend requests and that means everybody loves you and that means you are POPULAR!!!

Everybody has a different perception around popularity and what it means to them. Some people don't even care what their stats are saying or how many likes they get on Facebook. Others go out of they way to exaggerate their lifestyles in order to get more attention.

I don't judge.

If I have to be honest I do a bit of both. If I have a hot outfit or something really exciting happened I will put it all over Social Media in seconds. But other posts are just sharing for the sake of sharing, whether you "like" or heart it on IG-frankly I appreciate the effort it took to move your finger across the screen and tap it, but I wouldn't die if you didn't. I am cool.

These days popularity is often judged by the number of followers you have gathered on Social Media, which are practically virtual people, cause how often do you see those people? have you even met all your Facebook friends? I can tell you that I will most likely walk pass one of them and not even know it. But that's me.  When I was at school popularity was judged by either the boy you were dating or the company you kept. Real tangible people. Everything has become so virtual and unattainable that popularity has even taken on a different meaning entirely.

Before if you were popular it meant that people knew you and liked the type of person you were and enjoyed your company. These days popularity is how many likes you get on a post or how many followers you have on FB or IG, people whom you never met but they liked your two piece bikini or the short LBD you posted.

so what exactly has this taught me?
Do not care. Your worth is not measured by the opinions of others and your popularity should not measured on the number of likes or followers you have. As long as you have one good friend to tell your stories to, that's all the popularity you need.
