This Saturday was the prestigious annual Vodacom Durban July. Every year I say I'm going and every year something comes up and I cant attend. Its as if the Fashion Gods do not want me there or in Durban during that time. So the very least I look forward to is the fashion. To see who wore what and who totally embarrassed themselves and who was shinning and I somehow imagine myself there and I feel so much better.
When I saw this years pictures I was utterly disappointed. Firstly because this is one occasion when OTT is the norm and some outfits were honestly daytime outfits. Secondly, with the OTT theme and the races it is customary to use a hat-there were so few hats and fascinators I honestly doubted the source of those pictures for a moment. Thank God for "Check in", or else I would dispute that they were at the July. And lastly the outfit choices were poor and lacked imagination. I mean SA is blessed with some of the most amazing designers and talent and if that failed why didn't you just go to YDE or Zara and get something there? Honestly I have bought better things at Marabastad.
Maybe I am being a bit judgy because I wasn't there, and I didn't have the daunting task of finding an outfit and putting a look together. But like I always say-there are basic, fundamental rules for dressing up and if you follow those, God help you, you cant go wrong! The most basic rule is dress for your body type. Do not wear things that will not flatter you. And if you have a fantastic body-accentuate what you have.
For me this is like that Fashion Event of the year where I can ooh and aaah and say "check her out" or "I want that dress". With all the designers and resources and make-up artists that these celebs have on speed dial I was expecting the full package, instead I was given the Groupon voucher. I just feel celebs have a social responsibility to make us wanna be them and make us proud to be South African.
And with that said-My favourite outfit was by Amanda Du Pont. She wore a long sleeve white skin tight jumpsuit and her hair was on point. Every inch of her body was on display and she worked that jumpsuit like Beyoncé.
Next year I am planning in advance and I am going to attend. Even if I am there alone. I will be there and I will bring you all the action.
