In this land of milk and honey its easy to succumb to your every whim and desire rather than focussing on needs. Sometimes I think my mind needs to be reminded of what is a need and what is a want, cause it keeps confusing the two. I also have this constant battle of YOLO (you only live once) and "Save for a rainy day", something which all our mothers have taught us and practically ingrained into our brains, and I blame my mother for making me feel guilty every time I splurge.
I mean who wants to live off bread alone when there is crayfish, blue cheese and sushi? Who wants to even eat at home when there is Tasha's, Beluga's and Signature Restaurant? Do you need the latest fashion? Do you need that new pair of Zanotti's ? Do you need the latest pair of Jordons? The answer will always be NO NO and NO.
I recently engaged in a conversation with someone who wrote about locomute and how people are hiring cars just to flash for a month or so then go back to driving their Yaris! I have also heard of people who buy R2 mil houses and expensive cars and are eating pap at home everyday and they defend themselves by saying: What's wrong with eating pap? Why do we do this to ourselves and who do we want to impress so badly that we would punish ourselves this way?
No one needs anything extravagant, but we ALL want it. We want it to fulfil our own needs. It may be an emotional need, a child hood need or just a selfish need. Maybe you just want to be known for having the best things in life and your popularity will take a nose dive if you don't get it. But when is enough ENOUGH? when do you say-No thank you?
When you are comfortable with yourself and realise that material things do not define who you are.
People are going to hate you when you drive a Yaris and people are going to hate you when you drive a Mercedes. Do not put yourself in debt for people. You need to be comfortable with yourself and what you bring to the table. The only way you will ever impress anyone is with manners and courtesy. That Zara dress and Louboutins and SLK you drove up in are not going to help you when are rude, condescending and tacky. Material things can only do so much honey.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying don't splurge. All I'm saying is do it if you can afford it. Nice things will never finish-they only get better each year! Understand that nice things can only take you so far in life, the rest is left to your personality. Work on that as well, then you will find your balance.
