Don't you just love new things? I love the smell of new clothes and when most people wash their clothes before wearing it I would never dream of doing that. I want to feel that newness against my skin and take in that fabric aroma. And I feel the same way about shoes. There is just something about having pretty feet which makes me happy. So when I recently bought a pair of shoes I was super thrilled-I just could not wait to put them together with an outfit.
So that's how todays look came about. Inspired by a pair of shoes.
I don't normally wear flat shoes to work and when I did it felt like the world stopped turning. I was amazed at how many people noticed first of all, and how many people commented on everything besides my pretty shoes. What I tried to focus on was hijacked by the fact that it was flat shoes and not because it was pretty shoes. I was utterly disappointed. Why couldn't people look past the norm ( me wearing high heels) and try to at least appreciate the change (me wearing flats)? and then it dawned upon me. People feel safe with what they know. So when you change what they know about you and what they are used to, it scares them and they don't know how to react. They couldn't see past the fact that I was wearing flat shoes, cause they were looking for something familiar.
And it made me think. How often do I look past the pretty shoes and look for something familiar. Something which is safe and which I have become accustomed to because the alternative is too scary? We become so cautious in life that we don't often stick out our necks to see what's new and exciting around the corner. I did that with the new building. Because the Union Buildings are so cramped some of us are moving to a new building nearby. From the time I heard we moving I have just been dead set against it, doing everything besides chaining myself to my desk to try to get out of it. Its not that the new building is awful. I hear its very nice, with a mall nearby and its opposite the Gautrain, but all I see is "Flat shoes" not the pretty shoes.
But from today I'm going to change all that. I am going to embrace change and everything that's new and exciting. I'm going to look for pretty shoes. Lets see how that works out....lol
