On Sunday evening I went to the John Legend concert at the Coco cola Dome in Johannesburg. Despite the storm during the day, we were welcomed to clear dry skies and a fresh cool breeze as we entered the venue.
John Legend was as charming as ever and you could not keep your eyes off him as he belted out his love songs in a voice that only he can. The one thing I noticed about him was how humble he was. He had this look on his face of pure delight as we sang along and knew all the words to his songs...I don't know if it's because we from Africa and he just wasn't sure of his popularity here...but he was delighted and it showed the entire night.
He also took time to talk to us about his life and his humble beginnings. He started off his career in the year 2000 by moving to New York City to make it big. His first gig was at a Bar in Manhatton where he used to play for 5 people. Two of whom were the bar tenders and one was the door man. Lol. His first big break came 6 years later!!!
Let's just pause for a minute and reflect on that. 6 years later. How many of us have that amount of patience? That we would wait 6 years for our big break to come around? With Social Networking and cellphone technology around we have become used to instant gratification. Some of us do not know the struggle of waiting for your dreams and working towards a goal. We are the "now" generation. We want things to happen now. I'm sure in those 6 years John Legend was not sitting and folding his arms. Apparently he sent out his demo to every record station there was and everyone turned him down. But he didn't give up....He waited.
Do you believe in yourself enough to wait? Even though people don't believe in you do you have enough courage to believe in yourself? Are you a John Legend? Not everyone will be able to see or recognise the treasure you have inside but does that make it depreciate in value? No. That just means hold on. Be strong . Don't give up. Just wait. I believe we all are destined for greatness. God gave us all something extra we just need to find it and nurture it.
John Legend's first big break came when he worked with Lauren Hill on her multi platinum selling album...The miseducation of Lauren Hill. He did the melody to one of her songs. And I thought to myself, this guy, really. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him. Did that ever happen to you? When you had to use your talent for something and you did not get the fame? And then you were still stuck in the shade after that? I'm sure we all went through that hey? It feels awful. But it made me realise that sometimes those shady moments could lead to something great! Cause that's how he was discovered by none other than Kanye West!!
So besides the concert which I thoroughly enjoyed I have learnt so much from Mr Legend. I hope he comes back to SA real soon and has more stories to share.
Because I thought it might rain again I wore my leather pants and jacket. Both from YDE. The top is available on request and the shoes are from Steve Madden available at Edgars. The bag is from Forever New and the glasses are from Vogue Eye wear.
Hope you enjoyed today's look.
